A Capella Singing

SingingTeacher: Stephen Taberner

Stephen draws on nearly 20 years of experience as a choirleader to offer insights into blending, arranging, performing skills, different uses of the voice, rhythmic components and the use of humour through a dizzying range of songs from almost everywhere.

Open to all comers who sing, but likely to be of special interest to those who already sing in choirs.

This will all be applied to a big bunch of pretty interesting songs: Stephen has a highly variegated interest in world music, a passion for arranging great songs, and a liking for writing his own, so the repertoire is likely to include Split Enz, Samoa, Cuba, Georgia, Macedonia, and Leonard Cohen, as well as purpose written titbits. We'll be looking to sound as good as we can, but also have a fair number of giggles, and end up maybe one heartbeat closer to the big cosmic groove.

  • Saturday 7th 1.30pm – 5pm

Cuban band: Learn all the Cuban instruments and make a SALSA BAND!

After 10 years of churning out Salsa musicians in Sydney, Australia, TRESMAMBO and Cuban Pete are coming to NZ for the first time to stage an intensive music workshop at the Jambalaya Festival from which you will emerge performing an authentic Cuban Salsa band!

Tres MamboIn 15hrs of hard core tuition, spread over three days you will learn to play the authentic Cuban instruments in the traditional way namely, CONGAS, BONGO, GUIRO, MARACAS, CLAVES, CUBAN TRES, TIMBALES and how to play the more familiar PIANO, BASS, GUITAR, KIT DRUMS, TRUMPET and VOCALS in the context of a Cuban Band.

Previous musical experience or Spanish is obviously desirable, but not essential. This is because you will learn this music in a very African way, through singing and dancing and THEN actual instruction on the instrument. This is not only a new music but a new way of making music hence everyone is pretty well in the same boat when they start out.

DANCERS WELCOME – this course will take your dancing to a new musical level.

Visit the TresMambo website. Their graduates are out there playing in bands and so can YOU. Here is your chance.

Since this is a band course PLACES ARE LIMITED so act now!
